Breathe.

I posted this quote on my Instagram page two weeks ago, not knowing that I would have the opportunity to apply this very quote to my own life. To say my current work situation is challenging at times would be an understatement. Someone in a leadership role took the opportunity to attack my character under the guise of constructive criticism. She said that my silence in meetings can be misconstrued as me being lazy and a person who does not having anything to contribute. This is false on so many levels.

The sad part was (well, the whole situation was sad, but I digress), her words were out of context to the initial conversation and an obvious, albeit feeble attempt to get a reaction from me. Of course, we were conversing over the phone and I didn't have the opportunity to look her in the eyes when she said those things. Then again, who knows if she would have the audacity? Probably not.

It was in this moment that I was able to recognize my personal growth. I chose to stay calm because everything doesn't require attention or a reaction. There was a time when I would have listened to and received her words, allowing them to hurt me. I would have lashed out and defended myself to her, declaring that I am none of those things. I would have wasted time explaining my personality to her. In this case, I was able to breathe and say "Oh, okay." Unbothered. Unmoved.

I was able to breathe for two reasons:

I remained calm. Staying calm in this situation allowed me detach myself from the moment and take a good look at what and who I was dealing with. I was interacting with a person who thrives on drama. A person who does not know me and who does not know how to get me to react to her special brand of foolishness. People who thrive on drama cannot stand non-participants. She hates that I don't run to her. She hates that I stay to myself. She hates that I am comfortable in silence. And, she hates that I am confident enough in who I am that I don't try to prove myself to her or anyone else. People who thrive on drama and negativity do not have peace. I was not going to hand over mine.

Everything doesn't require attention or a reaction. What she doesn't know is I do not place value on the unsolicited words and opinions of people who do not matter. She may be in a position of leadership; but in the grand scheme of my life, she does not matter. She offered those words and I chose not to receive them. I don't feel the need to prove my worth to people because I know they can see it. In her case, she was trying to tear me down in order to make herself feel like a wise leader; because not so deep down, she isn't confident in herself.

In life, there will always be someone who will try to steal your joy and destroy your peace. Be careful. These people come in many forms and the tricky ones hide behind the notion of meaning well. In order to recognize these people, stay calm and remember that everything doesn't require attention or a reaction. The ones who truly mean well by you, don't try to tear you down.

When you can do these things, you will be able to protect your peace and breathe.
FORTY-TWO. I have loved and lost (including myself), went through career lows and highs, lost friends, gained new ones, took more risks than I ever would have expected, and risen like a phoenix out of tragedies that some people may not have mentally survived. As a way of returning to my blog, I want to share 20 things I picked up along the way:

I am strong.

I am beautiful and it is okay for me to say that out loud...to actual people.

I have a voice and I am not afraid to use it.

Being a better friend to myself has drawn greater opportunities.

Everyone can't go with you.

It's okay to say 'no'.

I will continue to wear red lipstick, jeans, chucks, glitter, a tutu and anything else I please. I do what I want.

I'm not a quitter, but I know when to stop.

Everything doesn't require my attention or a reaction.

If you don't like something, change it.

Anyone who tries to discourage you from doing something they aren't brave enough to do is not worth your joy. Fear is not wisdom.

Listen.

Trust your intuition.

Fear is a waste of the imagination.

I don't want kids and I'm not less of a woman for it. Society cannot and will not determine my worth.

It's never too late to try new things.

I'm a nerd and that's awesome.

Stay calm.

Appreciate where you are instead of longing for where you think you should be.

Breathe.

I plan on exploring each of these things and sharing how what these lessons mean to me. I hope you enjoy.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-59238024378072946052015-10-11T19:40:00.000-07:002015-10-12T11:07:10.419-07:00Red Hair

OMG, I dyed my hair. I've always wanted to color my hair but I was worried about drying out my hair and breakage. I also worried about ruining my curl pattern. But, I've always wanted red hair. Always. I didn't want just any red, I wanted what I like to call PHOENIX RED. I hope you can hear the drama and echo in my voice as you read 'phoenix red'. The last year has been the most challenging and painful; so, by the time I was ready add color to my hair, I felt like a phoenix who had risen from the ashes of turmoil and despair!!! (cue more drama and a slight echo)

I am happy to say that I am 100% obsessed with my hair. New hair means I would have to make a few changes to my routine. I started using Healing + Vitamin E Shampoo and Conditioner, by OGX. (CVS $7.99 ea) and the Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Intense Moisturizing Treatment, by OGX. (CVS $8.29)

I have to say that I am really impressed with these products. The shampoo cleanses my hair without stripping it and the conditioner leaves my hair incredibly soft. In addition to leaving my hair really soft, the conditioner has excellent slip for detangling. The Argan oil intense moisturizing treatment is a wonderful bonus to the shampoo and conditioner. It promises to restore shine and softness while strengthening your hair. I feel like it's delivering on that promise so far. I love how my hair feels when I'm done washing it and the shine really is incredible.

For styling purposes, I am still in love with Shea Moisture products.

I apply the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Reparative Leave in Conditioner (Target $10.99) followed by Coconut Hibiscus Curl Style Milk (Target $9.99) and I seal it with coconut oil. Of course, if you don't like coconut oil, feel free to use any oil of your choice. I then let my hair air dry and little manipulation and let the magic happen.

So far, I'm happy with my routine and I am loving my hair.

So this happened. While I was at work, one of my coworkers came to my desk to tell me that she parked very close to my car. So close, in fact, that she would not be able to leave until I left. She also said, "Don't worry, I didn't hit your car."

My initial thoughts were as long as she didn't hit my car it didn't matter. However, she parked so close to my car that other people cared. One person cared so much, she took a photo and brought it to my desk so I could share in her curiosity and outrage.

Before I continue, my car is the Volkswagen and hers is the awkwardly parked SUV. To which, I still don't understand how she pulled into her space like that because the way she parked couldn't possibly be recreated without damaging someone's car.

*kanye shrugs

Anyways, this coworker didn't just share the photo with me. She made sure to share this photo with anyone near by. And that's when it began. "Oh no she didn't!" "How could she be so stupid?!" "That couldn't have been me!"

While everyone else was going on about how they would cuss her out, fight her, report her to building management, and work to get her car towed and/or fined, I shrugged my shoulders and said I was happy that she didn't hit my car.

People stared at me in confusion and said it's the principle of the matter. They said I should be angry because they were angry even though it didn't happen to them. I said I'd rather be grateful for what didn't happen rather than get upset about what could have happened. I was told I was being too nice. She needs to understand what she did.

I didn't see it that way.

Sometimes in life we get so worked up about the could haves that we completely dismiss what is. In this situation, despite how close she parked to my car, she never touched it. There were no dents, no scratches and it wasn't impossible for me to move my car because I was parked on a corner. Negative what ifs do not deserve my emotions. They aren't real, but my emotions are.

In my opinion, what didn't happen far outweighs
what could have.
Especially since I really enjoyed writing on it and the feedback I received from friends, family and strangers. Many things have happened since then, but it has all happened for the purpose of growth. Aside from exploring with make up and skincare, I started a yoga practice and began a journey to take better care of my mind, body and spirit.

Last month, I read an article about growing food inside of your home, particularly celery. I read that cutting the base of celery and adding it to a bowl of water will produce a brand new celery stalk. I thought that would be simple enough, so I added the base of a celery stalk to water. Low and behold, about one week later Sprout was born.

Watching this plant grow from water is amazing to me. I've never had a plant of any kind before. What amazes me is how this plant is thriving solely with water, and my love of course. I admit, I talk to Sprout everyday and tell it how beautiful and strong it is. That's how impressed I am. To me, Sprout is a lesson in strength. This plant is not thriving in
it's natural habitat, which would be outside in soil and the sun. It's
thriving in a bowl of water, indoors. I've faced some challenges that have definitely taken me out of my comfort zone and forced me to show myself what I'm made of. I was challenged to grow with what I thought wasn't going to be enough. That's when I realized I had exactly what I needed.

Sprout is a month old now and it just dawned on me that it's going to get bigger. Much bigger. Of course I'm going to move it to a bigger bowl or pot or something when the time is right. This is just another lesson in growth and preparing to move to bigger and better places as you grow. Who knew that celery would become one of my teachers?
Money I end up spending on make up, but I digress. *sigh

About a month ago, I started making a face mask using turmeric and a few other ingredients. I have definitely noticed a positive difference in my skin since from the first time I've used this mask. My skin is smoother and more clear than it has been in a long time.

I started using this mask because I need to take better care of my skin; and in my opinion, the best way to do that is naturally. So, without further ado, below is a list of the ingredients I used to create this mask and their benefits.

1/2 Teaspoon of Turmeric

Turmeric has a number of health benefits, but I will list the benefits as they pertain to this mask. Turmeric provides the following:

Lightens blemishes

Gives skin a natural glow

Reduces skin infections

Reduces wrinkles

Fights against acne

Natural antiseptic

Good for acne

2 Tablespoons of Chick Pea Flour/Garbanzo Bean Flour

Naturally exfoliates

Stimulates blood circulation

Contains Vitamins A, K and B-complex

1 Tablespoon of Almond Oil

Moisturizes skin

Non-greasy

1 Teaspoon of Greek Yogurt

Anti-fungal

Antibacterial

Smooths skin

Reduces acne

If you don't have Greek yogurt, you can use plain yogurt or substitute yogurt with milk. It just so happens that I ran out of milk and I used Greek yogurt instead.

Combine the dry ingredients to the bowl first, then the almond oil and finally the yogurt. Stir well.

The mixture should look have the consistency of pudding and have the color of mustard.

Apply the mask all over your face and let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes. While you wait, put the left over mask in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator.

Once the time is up, rinse your face with warm water and voila! Soft and supple skin. I love the way my skin feels after using this mask.

Side note: Because of the turmeric, this mask will stain fairer skin. No worries, just use less turmeric. Instead of 1/2 of a teaspoon, use 1/4.
Usually for a trim, travel, special events or because my husband says something to the effect of,"So... you haven't worn your hair straight in a while."

It's not something I really think about. Anyways, in case you were wondering what my hair looks like straight, I present to you my favorite photo of 2012.

This past weekend, I had to work at the One Music Festival in Atlanta,
GA. If you live here or have ever been to Atlanta, you know it is HOT.
Of course I needed make up that would last all day and hopefully into
the night. Below is a list of steps I took to make sure my make up lasted all day. I was pleasantly surprised by the end of the night.

1. On a clean and moisturized face, I added a layer of primer. My primer of choice is a photo finish primer by Smashbox. I like this primer because it is oil free and glides on easily. I used about a dime size for my whole face.

2. Next I applied my foundation. I applied a little more foundation that usual because I needed it to last all day. With my Real Techniques buffing brush, I buffed one pump of Perfection Lumiere by Chanel to each side of my face. BTW, I plan on doing a review of this foundation in the near future.

3. I applied Select Cover Up Concealer by MAC under my eyes. Once that dried, I applied a dab of foundation on top of the concealer.

4. I applied Urban Decay's Primer Potion on my eye lids and eyebrows. After that set, I applied Maybelline's Color Tattoo, Bad to the Bronze, on my eyelid. I followed that up by sweeping Buck from Urban Decay's Naked Palette onto my crease and I filled in my brows with Revlon Colorstay brow enhancer.

5. I applied 24/7 Liquid liner by Urban Decay to my lash line and followed that up with Make Up Forever Smokey Lash Mascara (this is made of magic, if you didn't already know).

6. I applied Sephora's Urban Luxe All Over Powder on the tops of my cheeks and brow
bone as a highlight and followed with Merrily by MAC on my cheeks.

7. I set my make up with Cover FX Translucent Setting Powder.

8. Finally, I applied a nude lipstick and gloss.

I have to say, my make up lasted all day and into the night. I applied my make up at 9:30, but I forgot to take a picture. However, I did manage to take pictures throughout the day. Through all of the running around, Atlanta heat and sweating, my make up lasted much longer than I anticipated. I did not touch up my make up at all. I merely blotted my face to get rid of any sweat. Below is a timeline of my make up throughout the day.

I'm very happy with the way my make up lasted. My eye make up lasted longer than than the rest, but that's to be expected because I was blotting my face during the day and not my eyes.

Some of you have been asking me about my hair routine and so I've decided to post about it. It's pretty simple and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Mainly because I am in love with the products I use.

First note, before I wash my hair, I rub my mix of olive oil and rosemary oil (pictured in the water bottle) on my scalp and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Now, I'm going to describe what I do to my hair after I've washed and conditioned it because, well there's nothing special about washing and conditioning my hair. It is what it is. BUT, I will tell you, I do not co-wash ever. I know, shocking. I believe the purpose of shampoo is to clean the scalp and conditioner is for conditioning the hair. I will save the debate about shampooing versus co-washing for another post that will never happen.

The Ingredients

First, I divide my hair down the middle and keep one section to the side in a loose ponytail. I only wrap a rubber band around my hair once. That usually keeps it out of the way. Then I divide my hair into 3 or 4 sections, depending on the volume I want for the next day. In the case of this post, I divided my hair into 4 sections.

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Coco Curls

I then mix equal parts of Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Coco Curls together, rub it between my palms and coat my hair. After my little mix has blended into my hair, I add some flax seed gel. I continue this process until I have 4 braids. I then move on to the other side of my head.

(Note: my hair dries rather quickly, so I re-wet my hair with a spray bottle of water.)

The Braids

I never braid my hair tightly, only loose braids will do. You can see the unbraided curls match the curl pattern in my final look. I only braid my hair enough to maintain and protect my curls while I sleep. I do not want to stretch my curls.

The Turbie Twist

Finally, if I have to go to sleep, I cover my head with my Turbie Twist. This is only if I wait too late to wash my hair. I prefer to air-dry my hair for at least 4 to 5 hours before going to sleep.

When I wake up, I gently take out my braids, give my head a few shakes (maybe a part on the side) and go.

The Finale

That is all. No seriously.

Make Up For Ever - Aqua Liner

I have been looking for a green eyeliner that isn't too bright, isn't too dark but has a little shine to it. I was lead to Make Up For Ever. If you don't already know, this brand of make up is fantastic.

Make Up For Ever - Aqua Liner 4 Diamond Lagoon Green (Sephora $23.00)

This eyeliner comes in 15 colors and claims to be waterproof, tear proof and sweat proof. I want to let you know, it's all of those things. My eyelids tend to get a little oily throughout the day and if I don't wear an eyeshadow primer, my shadow and liner tend to crease and disappear. I put this liner on at 11:30 this morning and it stayed put until I was ready to take it off.

The applicator has a foam tip and is fine for precision line drawing. You can make your line as thick or as thin as you would like. It dries relatively quickly but it shines all day as if you just applied it.

Yup. I love it.
Coco Curls

It's been a long time. I shouldn't have left you. No, let me stop.

I
bought Coco Curls when I was at Fro Fashion Week way back in February. Since Fro Fashion Week, I have tried other products that have left me a bit underwhelmed but CoCo Curls is not one of those products. I love this stuff.

Coco Curls ($25 for 16 oz. and $15 for 8 oz.)

I bought the largest size because my hair eats everything and I thought I would blow through this like everything else. I was wrong. A little goes a long way and I can't see running out of it anytime soon. The photos are from the only container I've purchased since February. This is not to say someone else will not use more, this is just how it works for me.

Before I get into the texture and consistency, I have to tell you it's 100% natural. The ingredients include Shea butter, Aloe Vera and a host of pure essential oils. For me, this means my hair won't have a weird filmy feeling after my hair dries.

The texture is smooth and it has a thick consistency. I like to mix it with my Shea Moisture Curling Smoothie. Actually, mixing the two has been part of my new routine for the last few months. Ever since I've added this product to my routine, I've noticed my hair is softer and hydrated. It's great to use alone to add some moisture to your hair, seal your ends, ect. I definitely recommend this product and it is something I plan on purchasing again. As soon as I run out. Whenever that will be. LOL.
I must say I do enjoy these products. These products can be found at Sally Beauty Supply store and the price ranges from roughly $10 to $14. What do I love the most? Well, these products do not contain sulfates, mineral oils or SD alcohol AND the packaging is BPA free and recyclable. This line won't suffocate or strip my hair and the packaging is environmentally friendly. Everybody wins!

Curls Unleashed - Sulfate-Free Shampoo ($10.99)

This shampoo has a thick consistency but, surprisingly, it rinses really well. A little definitely goes a long way. A little going a long way simply means I won't use a lot of product washing my hair and more money in my pocket.

Oh and since I haven't mentioned it yet, yes, it smells great. This entire line smells fresh, clean and does not have that chemically enhanced sweet smell. You know, what I mean. It's that fruity smell you can't quite put your finger on, but deep down you know it's a fruit that can't be found in nature.

Curls Unleashed - No Restrictions Moisturizing Conditioner ($13.49)

This conditioner is labeled no restrictions for a reason. It can be used for detangling, co-washing, and as a regular conditioner. It has a thick consistency, but like the shampoo, it rinses well. After using this, my hair felt hydrated and very soft.

Curls Unleashed - Curl Defining Crème ($14.99)

Let me start by saying the Curl Defining Crème does not contain petrolatum, mineral oil, SD alcohol, or parabens. Again, no choking of the hair or stripping of moisture. In fact, in addition to defining your curls, it gives added moisture and doesn't flake. Another thing is it stretches your curls.

I have to be honest, I like my shrinkage so I'm not a fan of products that stretch curls. On the same note, while this product does provide curl stretching, it really depends on how much is added to your hair. I don't add a generous amount; just enough to moisturize my hair. I still loved the results.

Curls Unleashed Set It Off Curl Boosting Jelly - ($13.49)

If you want a soft and flexible hold for your curls, look no further. This purple gel, in combination with the Curl Defining Creme, gives your hair definition and hold without flaking and without giving you crunchy hair. It looks like it has a thick consistency but it doesn't. It's actually pretty light. Seriously, what more do you need?

These products do not complete the line. There is also the following:

Second Chance Curl Refresher

No Boundaries Leave in Conditioner

Let if Flow Shine and Define Mousse

Overall, I am satisfied with the products I've tried and I look forward to trying the others. If you decide to try them, let me know what you think.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-38833668246038213022012-02-10T16:59:00.000-08:002012-02-10T17:26:22.542-08:00Fro Fashion Week

Fro Fashion Week is a gathering all natural women dream of. Ok, maybe not dream, but it is an event that anyone who is interested in trying new products and learning more about maintaining healthy hair and skin shouldn't miss.

If you've never been (and you should go at least once), Fro Fashion Week is an event that takes place twice a year in Atlanta and showcases the hottest trends in hair and fashion. Not only that, but it's a great place for vendors to showcase their products.

Who was there? Why let me show you. The official Fro Fashion Week video is brought to you by Thirstyroots.com.
(Super Rant)The title of this post makes me sick. The other day I was talking with one of my friends and she said she wishes she had my hair because my hair is so much easier to deal with. Oh and no, she's never done my hair or even asked what it's like to have my hair. I guess looser curls equals better hair. *rolls eyes

Being the hot blooded Leo that I am, I immediately went on the defense. Why? Because it's not a compliment for someone to make the misguided assumption that my hair is easier to deal with because of its texture. It doesn't make me feel good for someone to say my hair is better. In reality, it's a put down. It's a put down to me and for the person saying it.

Stating my hair is easier to deal with, without actually knowing what I "deal with" is ignorant and dismissive. It's saying I don't have bad hair days, a long routine or struggles. It's saying my life is so much easier because of my hair. More importantly, it's also saying that whatever God gave you isn't good enough. Anytime you believe someone has a better anything than you, you're really saying what you have isn't good enough. In essence, you're saying a part of me is better than you. Not a compliment. Not okay.

If you want to have issues with your hair, have at it. But leave me out of it. I love my hair. I think it's fantastic, not better. At the same time, I wasn't raised, trained or conditioned to believe anything else. Do I admire the hair of others? Of course; but I would never wish I had hair like someone else and I certainly wouldn't think it was better than mine.

When it comes to our hair and how we treat each other, we have got to do better. This good, better, best hair bull sh*t needs to end.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-34202922923382707432012-01-08T22:03:00.000-08:002012-01-08T22:03:39.629-08:00Real Techniques Make Up BrushesI believe beautiful make up requires two things, great skin and great application. In order to achieve great application, you have to have the right tools. However, I do not believe this means you have to spend a fortune on your brushes. I recently purchased Real techniques Brushes, by professional make up artist and YouTube guru Samantha Chapman, at Ulta.

Before I describe in detail the brushes I bought, let me take moment and tell you why I love these brushes. First, they're affordable. While I like to mix high end make up with drug store products, I really prefer high end products. So, I don't want to spend too much money on brushes. Second, they don't shed. There's nothing worse than spending $55 for one brush only to find out it sheds more than I do. Third, they're synthetic and incredibly soft. In my opinion, synthetic brushes work better with cream blushes and eye shadows, they don't absorb as much product and they're easier to clean. Finally each set comes in a different color so you'll always know which brush goes to what area of the face. Of course you can use them for whatever you like; but if you're just starting out with make up, the color coding is helpful.

The Core Collection (Ulta $17.99)

This is the first set I picked up. It comes with four brushes that are meant for applying foundation, blush and lipstick. I'll talk about them in the order of the picture.

1. The Contour Brush - This dome shaped brush is great for contouring your cheeks; but I like to use it to apply cream blush and highlighter because it allows you to concentrate on specific areas on your cheeks. I haven't used a regular blush brush since I bought this one.

2. The Pointed Foundation Brush - I think this is a little small for applying foundation, so I use it more for applying concealer. It gets in close under the eye and a little concealer goes a long way with this brush.

3. The Detailer Brush - This brush is great for adding concealer to the tiniest places or you can use it to apply lipstick.

4. The Buffing Brush - This is my favorite brush in this set. Buffing foundation into the skin is so easy and the finished look is really natural. I used to apply my foundation with a stippling brush; but, I now prefer this brush.

The case also folds into a nice travel pouch that is easy to carry and store.

The Foundation Brush (Ulta $7.99

The Foundation Brush (Ulta $7.99) and The Blush Brush (Ulta $8.99)

I just wanted these. I bought the foundation brush on impulse. I actually use my hands to apply foundation and I follow up with the buffing brush. BUT, for $7.99, I just thought why not. Turns out, I really like this brush. If I were to apply foundation on one of my friends, I would use this brush. It does not absorb a lot of product and the application is flawless. I really like this brush.

The Blush Brush is another story. I needed a new fluffy brush because I only have one powder brush and I was using it to apply blush as well. I ended up using this brush to apply powder instead of blush. It gives an even application without taking up too much powder.

As you can see, the kit stands on it's own. Although I'm not sure if that is a feature I will use, I still think it's pretty cool. Over all, I am very pleased with these and I definitely recommend them.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-27959097824851020202012-01-05T21:27:00.000-08:002012-01-05T21:27:16.858-08:00Sweet Honey Treatment

For the last couple of weeks, my hair was feeling a little sad. It was dry, limp and just plain unhappy. I usually wash my hair every four days, but I've been stretching it to six or seven days for the last two weeks. I really needed to deep condition my hair and quite frankly, I was tired of seeing my hair in a bun. Then I remembered I purchased Sweet Honey Treatment Deep Conditioning Treatment from the ladies of The Natural Root, LLC (www.rootofthematterhair.com).

Kimbley Miller and Lori A. Lindsay started their company to teach women and girls to embrace their natural beauty. Part of that mission is to help mothers to learn how to train and maintain their daughter's natural hair. Together, they created a book that teaches natural hair maintenance called "The Root of the Matter" ($19.50 www.rootofthematterhair.com).

Now back to the Sweet Honey Treatment. I do believe this conditioner is amazing! At first I thought it was going to be difficult to rinse out because, well, it's made of honey, and honey is sticky. Naturally, it was a little sticky BUT it was not difficult to rinse out. My hair felt incredibly soft while I was rinsing it out. My hair hasn't felt that conditioned and hydrated in a while. I later learned, this is because honey is a natural humectant, meaning it helps your hair attract and hold moisture.

So, here's what I did:

1. I washed and conditioned my hair as usual.
2. I sectioned my hair into six sections and applied the conditioner.
3. I braided my hair in loose braids and covered them with a plastic cap and my Turbie Twist.
4. I let the conditioner sit in my hair for about 30 minutes.
5. I rinsed and followed my night time routine.

One jar of the Sweet Honey Treatment costs about $14 and keeps in the refrigerator for around 3 weeks. It's definitely worth the investment. My hair is no longer frowning or in a bun.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-85038770508851445232011-12-22T19:38:00.000-08:002012-01-02T13:51:41.813-08:00Natural ADDICTees

I love going to natural hair meet ups and events for several reasons. Of course I go because I want to keep up with the latest trends in hair care. But I also go for the shopping. I shop for natural products, super big and unique earrings and T-Shirts.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting Sonya L. Burks, one half of the mother/daughter team that created Natural ADDICTees.

Sonya (pictured with her niece Ciera) and her daughter Ashley created their line of T-shirts in order to inspire women to embrace their natural hair and to love themselves as "children hand crafted by God". Whether you are transitioning from the "creamy crack", teaching your kids to embrace their hair or if you have been natural all of your life, there is a T-shirt for you. Oh and you don't have to wait until the next natural hair meet up to get one. You can order online at http://www.naturaladdictees.com.

I think you know which one I own.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-31641940935492721412011-12-08T16:49:00.000-08:002011-12-08T17:40:50.609-08:00Make Up Case!!I have make up everywhere. I keep it in the bathroom, under the bed, in multiple purses, coat pockets (you get the idea). It's everywhere and I either have a hard time finding something or I end up finding something I forgot about. So, I ended up at Ulta today and bought a make up case (Ulta and Ulta.com $42.00). Not just any case, but a leopard print case that was on sale for 25% off!

It's the perfect starter case. Yes, I said starter. Please see below.

It's almost full. I don't mind because it's serving its purpose. May I never lose a piece of make up again. Yeah right! LOL!nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-6554489259818388802011-12-06T21:22:00.000-08:002011-12-06T22:08:47.040-08:00Tuesday Tresses!
Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner

If you don't know by now, let me tell you, I am a product junkie. I love trying new things. Make up, hair products, food...whatever. If it's new, I need see what it's like. So, when I was given the opportunity to try this deep conditioner for free...well you know the rest.

First, let me start by saying it smells amazing. This is probably because it contains Aloe Vera, Coconut, Olive, Soy, Argan Oil, Shea and Mango Butter. It has a thick consistency, but it is lightweight in texture.

So, I washed my hair as usual and added the conditioner. After about 30 minutes, I jumped back in the shower to rinse it out. Let me tell you, it rinses out with ease. Rinsing with ease is something I appreciate because I have thick hair and I do not like to double and triple check to make sure I rinsed everything out.

I have to say my hair was very soft and felt moisturized. Finger combing was a breeze. This product is definitely going to be added into the rotation.

Oh and before I forget, the Beautiful Textures line of products is affordable. Everything is under $9.00. Now, everyone can have access to quality haircare products without sacrificing their budget. Me likey.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-31374272961229127292011-12-03T23:59:00.000-08:002011-12-03T23:59:45.952-08:00Nars, Curls, Shea Moisture and L'OrealIt's December and I am a little late on telling you what I've enjoyed in November. Nars Sheer Glow Foundation

So, right now I am LOVING Nars Sheer Glow Foundation (http://www.narscosmetics.com, Sephora $42). Why do I love it so? I love it because my complexion can be difficult to match and this foundation is a perfect match. Also,it doesn't feel like I'm wearing foundation and it doesn't look like I'm wearing foundation. This foundation is lightweight with a medium and buildable coverage. It also claims to improve your skin with regular use. I can't say one way or another if this is true because there are too many factors that lead to skin issues and their resolution. The Sheer Glow Foundation is recommended for people with normal to dry skin. This foundation also comes in Sheer Matte. The Sheer Matte is recommended for people with oily skin. Now I have combination skin, but I bought the Sheer Glow anyway.

Look at Keven. Now look at me. Look at Keven again, and then me. What do you notice? If you guessed that it looks like I'm not wearing a ton of foundation, you are correct! I will admit the foundation is a little pricey compared to others, but the two things I will spend money on are foundation and eyeshadow. I'll run to the drugstore for everything else.

Here's one more pic.

L'Oreal Infallible Lip Color

So, I'm really loving this L'Oreal Infallible lipstick/gloss/color(CVS, Walgreens, Target, Walmart $11.99). It promises to stay put and it does just that. What I like most is, it does not dry out my lips. Not all long lasting lip colors can boast this feature. They may advertise it, but that definitely is not the case in real life not so much.

Shea Moisture Curling Souffle

As you may already know, am a fan of all things Shea Moisture. The Curling Souffle (Target and Walgreens $9.99) is no exception. Lately, I have been using this instead of my flaxseed gel and I love it just as much. Instead of mixing it with the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie (Target and Walgreens $9.99), I mix it with Curls Curl Creme Brule (Target $9.99).

The Curling Souffle contains flax seed oil, coconut oil, agave nectar and other ingredients that are pleasing to my hair. I like it for the same reasons I like using flax seed gel. It's lightweight, doesn't leave my hair crunchy and it's overall natural goodness.

Please note: It can leave your hair crunchy if you use too much. Should you find yourself in a situation where you have Ramen Noodle hair, rub a little of your favorite oil or shea butter in your palms and scrunch your hair. This should soften the curls and relieve you of your noodles. Unless you like that. Hey, some people do.

If you try any of these products, let me know what you think.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-10058669056224356382011-11-18T21:56:00.000-08:002011-11-21T11:10:55.717-08:00Turbie Twist

I had to post about this. Now, I'm not one to try things you see on infomercials and whatnot, but I had to try this. It was calling me. I never towel dry my hair. But when I deep condition, I don't like putting a mega large towel on my head. It's heavy and I just don't like it. But I digress.

So, I always see them in CVS and I thought,eh, it's $7.00, why not<strike></strike>. When I got home, I washed my hair and added deep conditioner. I then put on my plastic cap and whipped out my Turbie Twist. It really is impressive. The cool thing about it is the loop in the back. All you do is put the towel on your head, twist the front and insert the front of the towel into the loop in the back. That's it. You're done.

This stays in place, it's gentle on your hair and did I forget to mention it stays in place, even with all of my hair? Seriously, you can't beat this.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-89048366924530617142011-10-29T13:55:00.000-07:002011-11-19T08:01:27.144-08:00Clarisonic, Neutrogena, Revlon and more...So I bought a few things this month and some stood out more than others. So, I thought I would share.

First up: Neutrogena Make up Remover Cleansing Towelettes (CVS $7.99)

I love the clean scent and it removes make up without leaving a sticky residue. One sheet usually does the trick, depending on how much make up you're wearing.

Second: Burt's Bees Soap Bark and Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream (CVS $8.99)

I've been a fan of Burt's Bees for a long time. After two years of trying different products, I came right back. I have combination skin and this cleansing cream removes dirt and make up while leaving my face feeling cool and refreshed. No seriously, there's a cool tingling feeling on my face after I've finished washing. Chamomile. Gotta love it.

I also like that it is 97.99% organic. I am not a fan of cleaning my face with cleansers that contain ingredients I can't, no don't want to, pronounce and include chemicals that have many uses such as making plastic, sealing pipes...ect.

Third: Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick (CVS $8.99)

The first one I bought was Fuschia and I immediately fell in love. I didn't wait to get home to try it. As so as I got in the car I cracked it open and put it on. The color payoff is beautiful. It's called ColorBurst for a reason. Fuschia was soon followed by Raspberry and Rosy Nude. Each color is as beautiful as the last.

Fourth and Final: The Clarisonic Mia (Sephora $119)

I have heard wonderful things about the Clarisonic Facial Cleansing system. I thought it was too expensive, so I decided to pass on it (although I secretly wanted to try it.) As luck would have it, I came into possession of a gift card. The Clarisonic Mia is the smaller, "travel size" version of the products. It rotates at one speed and has an automatic timer that turns off after the recommended one minute of use.

I've been using this at night before bedtime for the last week and I love it. For me it is one of the products I wish I purchased a long time ago. My skin is noticeably smoother and my face has a nice glow.

October was a good month.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-35358077489999535402011-10-20T20:44:00.000-07:002011-11-19T08:02:04.488-08:00My Weight Loss JourneyLast year I reached the heaviest weight of my life. According to some people, I was "thick". I never planned on being thick. I was always a thin person. But a little thing called complacency set in when I started to gain weight. A few pounds here and there weren't that bad because I didn't start off heavy and I kinda liked finally having some meat on my bones. I was always small and wanted to gain weight. I didn't know that once I started gaining, it wasn't going to stop. The weight kept coming because I wasn't paying attention.

When I started gaining weight, it really did sneak up on me. I liked to blame it on being happy, being sad, good food, blah blah blah. The excuses were endless. But really, I had nothing and no one to blame but myself. At some point I stopped paying attention and became complacent.

One day, I had a moment. That all defining moment that has to happen in order for someone to take weight loss seriously. I saw a picture of myself in what I thought was my favorite yellow dress. When I looked at the picture I thought this can't be me! How did I let myself get to this point? Why didn't anyone tell me? My cheeks were starting to eat my face.

No one is going to tell you you're fat. Either the people around you haven't noticed or they don't want to hurt your feelings.

I decided to do something about it. I mean really. I joined a gym that has exercise classes pertaining to my fitness goals and interests. I've tried losing weight before. I joined a regular gym and worked with a trainer. I know, I know, everyone either joins a gym or gets a trainer. I did both. But um..why did I gain even more weight with the trainer? It was during a time when I still wasn't paying attention and apparently, neither was my trainer. Either that, or he was paying attention and thought as long as I was heavy, he would always have a client. But I digress.

Here's my before and after, followed by what I did to lose weight.

1. I figured out why I wanted to lose weight and decided fitness is going to be a way of life and not a temporary solution.

2. I found workouts that pertained to my interests and fitness goals.

3. I didn't go on a diet. I changed my diet.

4. I found THE BEST fitness friend in the whole world. It's a great idea to find one if you can. My friend and I do not belong to the same gym, we have never worked out together and we don't live near each other. We just keep each other accountable.

5. I made exercise a part of my life.

6. I stopped making excuses.

I took about four months to lose 30 pounds and I've kept it off for the last six months. I have a few more to go and I believe I will accomplish my goal before 2012.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-45973385633655608382011-10-09T22:11:00.000-07:002011-10-09T22:12:29.005-07:00The Benefits of Rosemary Oil

Ok, so I thought rosemary and rosemary oil was only good for cooking. But as I continue my journey to learn how to take care of my hair and body naturally, I am discovering more and more that God was serious when He said He is the supplier of ALL of your needs.

Have blemishes? Try a little lemon juice and honey. Need to exfoliate? Cut a tomato in half, dip it in sugar and scrub away (gently of course). We'll talk about all of this at another time.

Right now, I'm focusing on rosemary oil. Utilizing the benefits of rosemary oil is a great way to give your hair a little assistance in the hair growth department. Here are three reasons why rosemary oil is beneficial for hair growth:

1. Stimulates blood circulation for hair growth
2. Cleans the scalp and removes dandruff
3. Covers gray hair

I apply a rosemary and olive oil mix to my hair an hour before I wash my hair. Of course there are other essential oils that mix well with rosemary oil; but I like to use olive oil. Rosemary oil should not be used alone and should be mixed with another oil such as olive oil, jojoba oil, or tea tree oil.

There are two ways to create the mix I use: The Quick and Dirty Way or The Long Way.

The Quick and Dirty Way

You will need:

An air tight container (preferably glass)
1 1/2 cups of olive oil
Rosemary oil

Pour the olive oil into the container. Add about 20 drops of rosemary oil to the olive oil and store in a dark place for about an hour. After storing for an hour, massage the oil into your scalp and leave it in until you wash your hair. I leave it in for an hour; however it's ok to leave it in overnight. Just don't forget to wash it out.

The Long way

You will need:

Air tight container (preferably glass)
1 1/2 cup of olive oil
Two tablespoons of dried rosemary (fresh rosemary will spoil)

Place the rosemary in container and pour the olive oil into the container. Store the mixture in a dark place for about 4 to 5 days. After storing, drain the rosemary and place the oil back into the container. Use as directed above.

You may experience a tingling sensation while using rosemary oil. I can definitely feel the stimulation of my scalp.

If you try this method, let me know what you think after about 30 days.nikkisunshinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12403023577128042387noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2300663659297177983.post-10233849997167460702011-09-29T14:57:00.000-07:002011-12-08T14:11:55.885-08:00Hello Swarovski!

Two of my favorite things in the whole wide world have decided to combine their powers and create a line. Swarovski and Hello Kitty. *happy sigh.

This fall, Swarovski developed a line of Hello Kitty accessories that includes jewelry, crystal figurines, a purse and business card holder. Of course I want the jewelry and the business card holder.

Whether you are six or 66, there is something for every true Hello Kitty and Swarovski fan. I wonder which one I will buy first?
